The challenge!

Many tall van drivers know the problem:
the advantages of a compact van come at the expense of the length of the lying area in the rear of the vehicle.
At the suggestion of many "cross sleepers" and the motorhome service centers, functional-design has developed the GRP Longsleeper©, for mounting on the rear side panels, the driver and/or passenger side.

These products are also called rear widening / flares / ears / cross beds for panel vans.

 

The solution:
Our new Longsleeper© made of GRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic) also provides a great feeling of space in the rear! With transverse bed layouts, the "XL customers" finally get enough length for a relaxed sleep. This allows for an additional depth of 100mm on thee driver's side, or 45 mm on the passenger's side, and allows for a large margin for insulation/cladding.
All our products are "Hand Made in Ostwestfalen" and are therefore subject to high quality standards.
The Longsleeper© fits exactly to the sheet metal contour of the Sprinter and is delivered in a high-gloss white surface in the color of Mercedes Artificial White. On a white vehicle, our Longsleeper© can be installed without costly painting. Our high surface quality is also an advantage when painting, as the painter only has to lightly sand the Longsleeper© and can apply the paint directly. Time-consuming and cost-intensive work steps such as filling - sanding, filling - sanding, priming - sanding are no longer necessary.
Important: The Longsleeper© is attached to the side panel by means of an inwardly cranked adhesive and mounting shoulder. Thus the assembly is invisible! The GRP attachment is fixed with 1K-PU glue and 6 pieces of M6 screws. This allows maximum flexibility in the choice of the actual sheet metal cutout.
The Longsleeper© is delivered with a "Splittergutachten". The splitter certificate of the TÜV Rheinland is assigned to the GRP body of the Longsleeper © and is not vehicle-bound. The bed widening is delivered with detailed papers and a sample certificate for obtaining the operating permit. Thus, the registration at the TÜV without problems!

The assembly:

The GRP attachment can even be installed by private customers with manual skills.

In most cases, a vertical strut must be removed in the cutout area. The strut is only slightly dotted and glued to the outer sheet. Disassembly can be done without hesitation and without problems! Here is a side window in the series extensions of many manufacturers.

Put on the GFK Longsleeper© over the inside and thus invisible glue or assembly shoulder and pull off excess glue and the assembly is done. On request, functional-design can also supply the appropriate 1-component adhesive and mounting screws.

The company Functional Design recommends to provide the horizontal mounting shoulders with min. 3 screws (M6 x 25 mm) each.

The insulation should be made with 10 mm extreme insulator. The trim is done individually in the interior design of the vehicle. Velour has proven itself here.
